Rolling Stone's List of Meltdowns and Blowups

Along with all the lists of the top songs and albums of the decade, Rolling Stone has made an entertaining list of artists' shenanigans that stood out the most over the past 10 years. The list is long (surprised? of course not), but here are my personal favorites:

• Ashley Simpson's lip syncing on Saturday Night Live and avoiding an awkward moment by doing a jig

• Madonna adopts an orphan that wasn't really orphaned

• A bald Britney Spears attacks a papa-paparazzi car with an umbrella-ella-ella

• Brett Michaels gets nailed by part of the stage set during a performance at the Tonys. I'm wondering why he'd be so upset and embarrassed by that after Rock of Love one AND two.

• Metallica sues Napster

• Mariah Carey pops in on TRL and goes a little nuts with an ice cream truck.

• Madonna and Brittney girl-on-girl and Adam Lambert's boy-on-boy award show performances

• And of course, the Kanye vs. Taylor incident. He appeared on the Jay Leno Show afterward, where Leno asks him what his mother would think if she were with us - a little harsh, even for Kanye.

What would we do without entertainers?

Australia Needs to Chill Out: It's Britney Bitch

Britney Spears has arrived in Australia and already the Aussies have their knickers in a bunch. Ms. Spears is set to perform 14 shows while in Australia with tickets going for as much as $1,500. This creates a problem because Brit Brit is known for lip-synching during her shows and the Australian government wants consumers to know that's what they're paying for.

The Aussies want to pass a law that would require artists to claim whether they will be lip-synching or performing live during their performance so audience members will know exactly what they're paying for. That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard.

As my good friend Tyler once told me, "Honey, if you want to hear a good voice you go to a Christina Aguilera show. You go to a Britney Spears concert for the performance." I agree. Everyone knows that Britney Spears lip-synchs. We've known this since day one of her career. That's not why we like her, it's because she's the whole package. It's because she is the pop princess and she can do whatever the hell she wants. I couldn't dance around and sing for an hour and a half straight, yeah right. So Australia back off and let her do the damn thing. Her fans know exactly what they're paying for.

Pop Culture, No Longer Magic?

I’m walking through the living room last night and catch yet another Jonas Brothers' performance. This time they’re prancing around the stage at the tree lighting extravaganza in Rockefeller Center. They’re singing some lame Christmas song about how “you can take this awesome scarf my grandma made for me…’cause all I want for Christmas is the girl of my dreams, yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.” Fast forward 30 minutes later when I see the same Jonas Brothers sitting in the front row at the Grammy Nominations Live show.

“But they are anywhere and everywhere” you say, “so what’s so weird, or dare I say, magical about that” you ask.

To that I respond “how is it possible for even the most magical of boy bands, excuse me trio, to be at two live shows on two separate coasts within minutes"?

I am now a believer.

The Resurrection of the "Boy Band" (insert scary/cool looking font)

I am a little late on reporting this, but I'll still discuss the resurgence of this "brand new idea" of boy bands. Websters definition with the Keveeno explanation of a boy band is; a band acumalitive of mainly boys with the subtraction of a female presence meaning that possible there is a female presence within one of the boys soul, hence the Lance rumors. Boy bands usually are used as marketing around a female pop sensation (See Britney and N'Sync/ Backstreet Boys). Today they go younger to try and resurrect record sales with artists like Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers. So pump up the vocal enhancers, hide the wardrobe malfunctions, this is the resurrection of The Boy Bands.

(Image: New Kids on the Block, the O.G.s of the Boy Band phenomenon)

Without looking up the statistics, I'm pretty sure with the hype the Jonas Bros are getting more profits from touring than than selling records. This all shows a striking resemblance to when I was in Middle/Highschool and N'Sync was huge. The girls at my school were more into Usher, B2K and more of the RnB pop sensations, but there were a few that caught on with this boy band craze. Well, as with these political debates right now, it gets old. There was a break where they pushed artists who just were not ready as there was a steady decline in record sales across the board. I guess there was a breaking point where they needed something… anything. They found it in The Jones Bro's.

Success in todays market is strongly pointing toward a more live performance rather than cd driven business model. When will the statistics of billboard top 200 become irrelevant and selling out shows become more of what defines success today?

Piece of Me(at) - Britney Spears

Kudos to MTV for trying something different with the exclusive internet release of Britney's new video, but for god sakes promote something with substance. They're also doing the same thing with another piece of classy media, Jackass 2.5.
There's a reason why I stopped watching MTV and they keep reinforcing it over and over again w/ the reality shows, the mere fractions of music videos, and the less than credible artists they promote.
I don't hate MTV, I dislike the boring, money-hungry machine it has become.
Happy Holidays!
